How to say "Làm ơn" in French

**S’il vous plaît**/**S’il te plaît**

In French, politeness is deeply tied to formality and social hierarchy. Unlike Vietnamese, where Làm ơn can be used broadly, French distinguishes between addressing strangers, elders, or people in positions of authority (use S’il vous plaît) and peers, children, or close acquaintances (use S’il te plaît). Skipping the appropriate form can sound overly familiar or even rude. Always observe how others address you first—if they use vous, mirror it; if tu, follow suit.

  1. For formal or unfamiliar situations (strangers, elders, authority figures) Use S’il vous plaît to soften requests or demands, especially in shops, restaurants, or public transport. It’s the safest default for beginners.

    • Pourriez-vous m’aider, s’il vous plaît ?
      Could you help me, please?
    • Je voudrais un café, s’il vous plaît.
      I’d like a coffee, please.
    • Pouvez-vous répéter, s’il vous plaît ?
      Could you repeat that, please?
  2. For informal or familiar situations (friends, children, peers) Use S’il te plaît with people you know well or those younger than you. It’s warmer but still polite.

    • Passe-moi le sel, s’il te plaît.
      Pass me the salt, please.
    • Tu peux me donner un coup de main, s’il te plaît ?
Can you give me a hand, please?
    • Ferme la porte, s’il te plaît.
      Close the door, please.
  3. With commands or urgent requests (still polite) Even in urgent situations, S’il vous plaît or S’il te plaît softens the tone. Avoid sounding demanding by pairing it with pourriez-vous (formal) or peux-tu (informal).

    • Aidez-moi, s’il vous plaît, je suis perdu.
      Help me, please, I’m lost.
    • Attends-moi ici, s’il te plaît.
      Wait for me here, please.

👉 Memorize this first: S’il vous plaît for strangers, elders, or formal settings. It’s the most versatile and safest choice in daily life.
