In Vietnam, politeness is deeply tied to age, social status, and familiarity. Using làm ơn (literally "do a favor") is a polite way to soften a request, but it works best with strangers, acquaintances, or people younger than you. With elders or superiors, a more formal tone is expected—avoid using it unless they use it first. Tone matters: saying it with a smile makes it sound friendly, while a flat tone can sound impatient or demanding.
