How to say "Grazie" in Vietnamese

**Cảm ơn**

In Vietnamese culture, expressing gratitude is deeply tied to social hierarchy, relationships, and the level of formality. The phrase you choose depends on who you’re thanking—whether they’re older, younger, a stranger, or someone you have a close bond with. Using the wrong level of politeness can come across as overly familiar or, conversely, distant and cold. For beginners, the safest approach is to match the formality of the person you’re speaking to.

  1. For close friends, peers, or people younger than you Use the casual and warm Cảm ơn to express thanks in informal settings. This is the most common way to say “thank you” among equals or to someone you’re comfortable with.

    • Cảm ơn anh đã giúp tôi! "Thank you for helping me!"
    • Cảm ơn em nhé! "Thanks, little sister/younger sibling!"
  2. For elders, strangers, or in formal situations Add a polite particle to show respect. Cảm ơn ạ is the standard polite form when speaking to someone older or in a professional context. The particle ạ softens the tone and signals deference.

    • Cảm ơn anh ạ! "Thank you, sir/older brother!"
    • Cảm ơn cô ạ! "Thank you, ma’am/teacher!"
  3. For very formal or public contexts Use Tôi xin cảm ơn (literally “I humbly thank you”) to convey deep respect, such as in speeches, formal letters, or when thanking someone of high status.

    • Tôi xin cảm ơn tất cả mọi người! "I sincerely thank everyone!"
    • Tôi xin cảm ơn quý vị đã tham dự! "I thank you all for attending!"
  4. When you want to emphasize extra gratitude Add rất (very) before cảm ơn to intensify your thanks. This works in both casual and polite contexts.

    • Cảm ơn anh rất nhiều! "Thank you so much, brother/older man!"
    • Tôi xin cảm ơn rất nhiều ạ! "I sincerely thank you very much!"

👉 Most useful for daily life: Memorize Cảm ơn first—it’s the go-to phrase for most situations. If you’re unsure, add ạ to sound polite. For strangers or elders, Cảm ơn ạ is your safest bet.
