How to say "Ciao" in Hindi

Transliterationnamaste

In Hindi-speaking cultures, greetings reflect respect and social hierarchy. नमस्ते (namaste) is a universal greeting used across ages, genders, and statuses, but its tone changes subtly depending on the relationship and context. It is appropriate in both formal and informal settings, and is often accompanied by a slight anjali mudra (palms pressed together near the chest). Avoid using it with strangers in very casual contexts unless they initiate first.

  1. Standard greeting (neutral/formal) Use नमस्ते when meeting someone for the first time, in professional settings, or with elders. It conveys politeness and respect without being overly formal.

      "Hello, how are you?"
      "Hello, my name is Rahul."
  2. Casual greeting (friends/family) Among close friends or family, नमस्ते can feel slightly formal. Instead, use हाय (hāy, "hi") or अरे (are, "hey") for a relaxed tone. However, नमस्ते is still acceptable if you want to maintain warmth without formality.

      "Hey, how’s it going?"
      "Hey, when did you arrive?"
  3. Morning/evening variations While नमस्ते works anytime, Hindi speakers often pair it with time-specific greetings for extra warmth:

    • सुप्रभात, नमस्ते! (Good morning, hello!)
      "Good morning, hello!"
(Good evening, hello!)
      "Good evening, hello!"
  4. With strangers or service contexts In shops, hotels, or public transport, नमस्ते is the safest choice. Pair it with a nod or the anjali mudra for politeness.

"Hello, please give me a cup of tea."
"Excuse me, is this seat free?"

👉 Most useful for daily life: Memorize नमस्ते first. It’s universally understood, polite, and works in 90% of situations. For friends, add हाय (hāy) or अरे (are) later.
