How to say "Goodbye" in Vietnamese

Tạm biệt

In Vietnamese culture, farewell phrases depend heavily on the relationship between speakers, their relative social status, and the formality of the situation. Unlike English, Vietnamese often uses different words or tones to reflect respect, intimacy, or hierarchy. When saying goodbye, pay attention to whether you’re addressing someone older, younger, a stranger, or a close friend—this will determine the appropriate phrase. Using the wrong level of formality can come across as rude or overly familiar. For beginners, the safest default is a neutral or slightly formal phrase unless you’re in a very casual setting with peers.

  1. Standard farewell for most situations Use Tạm biệt when leaving a conversation or place where you won’t see the person again for a while. It works in both formal and informal contexts with strangers, colleagues, or acquaintances.

    • Tạm biệt, hẹn gặp lại vào tuần sau!
Goodbye, see you again next week!
    • Tạm biệt, chúc chị ngủ ngon!
Goodbye, wish you a good night!
  2. Formal or respectful goodbye (to elders or superiors) For older people, bosses, or those you respect, add a polite particle or honorific. Tạm biệt ạ is a gentle, respectful way to soften the phrase. The particle ạ (pronounced like the ‘a’ in ‘father’) shows deference.

    • Tạm biệt ạ, chú!
      Goodbye, uncle!
    • Tạm biệt ạ, thưa cô!
      Goodbye, ma’am!
  3. Casual goodbye among friends or peers With close friends or people your age, you can use Bai (a slang version of ‘bye’) or Chào nhé (literally ‘say hello later’), which feels friendly and informal.

    • Bai, mai gặp lại nha!
      Bye, see you tomorrow!
    • Chào nhé, đi cẩn thận!
      Bye, be careful!
  4. Goodbye when leaving a place (less common, more situational) Vietnamese rarely say goodbye when simply leaving a room or shop unless it’s a long separation. Instead, they might just say Thôi, tôi đi đây (I’m going now) or Tôi phải về (I have to go). Tạm biệt is reserved for clearer farewells.

    • Thôi, tôi đi đây, tạm biệt mọi người!
Alright, I’m going now, goodbye everyone!
    • Tôi phải về rồi, tạm biệt anh!
I have to go now, goodbye!

👉 Most useful for daily life: Memorize Tạm biệt first—it’s the safest, most versatile phrase for almost any situation. Use Tạm biệt ạ when speaking to elders or in formal settings to show respect.
