「flourish」は成長や繁栄の過程を強調し、自然な発展を表す。一方「prosper」は経済的な成功や利益を強調する。例:「The economy flourished naturally.」vs「The company prospered with high profits.」
「flourish」は主に肯定的な成長や発展を表すため、否定的な文脈では使用しない。例:「The business flourished.」はOKだが「The business flourished despite the crisis.」は不自然。
ラテン語の 'florere'(花を咲かせる)に由来し、16世紀に英語に取り入れられた。'flor-'(花)が語源。
